PREVALENCE OF TRAUMATIC DENTAL INJURIES IN PERMANENT TEETH IN RELATION TO AGE, GENDER,AND PREDISPOSING FACTORS AMONG 6 12 YEAR OLD SCHOOLCHILDREN IN AL NAJAF CITY

Abstract

Background: Traumatic dental injuries (TDI) could have negative effects on the physical and psychosocial well-being of children. Prevalence of traumatic injuries in permanent teeth among 6-12 age school children in AL Najaf city Trauma to anterior teeth is a common reason for emergency room visits among children. Methods: The study group included 600 (302 male and 298 female), At age range of 6 -12 years. The dental examination was done by using dental mirror, probe and cotton pellet under sufficient artificial light. Data including age, gender, type of trauma, number of teeth affected and causes were collected. Results:TDI was found in 40 of samples 6.67% of the study group.TDI was found in age from 6 to 9 (8.2%) was higher than in from 10 to 12 (5.5%).According to the type of trauma type II was the most common (27.5%) followed by type III (25%) then type I (20%). The most common cause of trauma was fall (50%). Only 9 cases were treated from trauma (22.5%)with no significant association with age and gendergroups. According to the teeth affected maxillary right central incisor was the most affected tooth. Conclusion: Traumatic dental injuries were more common among younger children, with falls being the predominant cause and Type II trauma the most frequent pattern. The maxillary right central incisor was the most commonly affected tooth, while treatment was received by only a limited proportion of affected children.
